A Brief Guide to GPS Navigation

Global Positioning System (GPS) devices provide a precise location of where you are, and how to get where you need to go. But how do they actually work? If you’re thinking about buying a portable navigation (PND) device, or you just want to find out more about GPS technology, here are answers to some of the questions most often asked about PND devices and GPS.

How does a GPS device work?

The Global Positioning System operates on the basis of data provided by Earth-orbiting satellites. Your navigation device picks up signals from these satellites and quickly determines your exact position, so that your movements can be tracked in real time. Those signals are constantly sent to your device, so that you can receive accurate information about where you’re going and how to get there. To help you find the best route to your destination, your navigation device utilizes the map data contained on a CD or an SD card. If Digital electronics are at the heart of the GPS navigation system.you deviate from that route, the software recalculates the route and tells you how to get back on track.

What appears on my display?

Displays show you both where you are and the path to your destination. As you move along your route, a voice gives you turn-by-turn instructions. If desired, points of interest (POIs) – such as restaurants, parking garages, and bank machines – will be displayed on your screen as you travel. The display may tell you the remaining distance to your destination and your estimated time of arrival.

What is a PND device?

Portable navigation (PND) devices are small enough to fit in your pocket, yet powerful enough to help you find the routes and services you need.

PND devices can be transferred from one car to another and used for outdoor activities such as biking or sightseeing. Some devices feature radios, MP3 players, video features, and hands-free phones.

What are some of the other devices that utilize GPS technology?

Some personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones may also offer navigational features that utilize GPS technology. Multi-task devices such as these are recommended for people who prefer the convenience of an all-in-one solution. In addition, GPS-based systems are found in many automobiles.
