Sustainability Education
EcoVillage at Ithaca

EcoVillage at Ithaca (EVI) is an internationally recognized intentional nonprofit organization dedicated to developing a working model of sustainable community and promoting sustainable living through a wide variety of educational programs.

Ecovillages are a model of sustainability and can offer a valuable hands-on education.

The residential component of EcoVillage is comprised of 60 households in two tightly clustered cohousing neighborhoods surrounding a shared commons. Housing makes up less than 10% of EVI land, with over 150 acres on Ithaca's urban fringe preserved for organic agriculture, wildlife conservation, recreation, and outdoor education.

Media Coverage

Television programs about EVI have been aired in Japan and Spain, as well as on PBS, Nickelodeon, CNN's "Earth Matters," and more. National Public Radio has highlighted EVI in several national and dozens of regional shows, and EVI has appeared in prominent articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, ForbesChronicle of Higher Education, Utne Reader, Communities Magazine, and the Cohousing Journal, among other print media.

In 2005, New Society Publishers issued EVI Director Liz Walker’s book EcoVillage at Ithaca: Pioneering a Sustainable Culture, an excellent account of the founding and development of this inspiring community.

Center for Sustainability Education

Education is an essential component of the EVI mission, and the nonprofit has a long history of teaching sustainability skills to the general public, students of all ages, and professionals.

Building on this impressive track record, EVI is now establishing a Center for Sustainability Education that will house a number of different programs, including its current workshops and EVI Experience Weekends, an Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, visitor housing, and the New Roots School, a secondary school dedicated to empowering young people as citizens and entrepreneurs to create just, democratic communities and thriving green economies that maintain and restore the natural world.

West Haven Farm

Begun in 1992 by Jen and John Bokaer-Smith, West Haven Farm grows over 250 varieties of certified organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Based on the model of community supported agriculture (CSA), the ten-acre farm provides food for about 1,000 people each week.

West Haven provides not only food for EcoVillage but a valuable source of sustainability education.

The Institute for Sustainable Agriculture will draw on the resources of West Haven Farm to develop the next generation of organic farmers, providing a living laboratory for students at the New Roots School and a training ground for farmers from all over the country.
